A reader writes:  Hi. I was just wondering if you knew of any difference between all the different sex toy manufacturers?  There seems to be a few major manufacturers, all making the exact same looking toys... it gets very confusing to choose.  Is there any difference between Product X made by Company A or Company B or Company C????

Answer: It is very confusing. In fact, some manufacturer's even share the same molds, but the mechanism inside might be different. Others might steal ideas and make a very similar but sometimes very cheap knockoff. One good example is the Rabbit Pearl. The idea for this Japanese vibrator has been borrowed by several companies. We only found a couple that made a reliable unit- the others we tested had major defect problems. Then there were the endless variations on the rabbit. Many of these missed out on key factors that makes the Rabbit Pearl so cool. Many variations have flat areas with beads instead of the bulging area that nestles so perfectly right up against the vaginal lips. Others have only one appendage instead of the two ears that rest on each side of the clit in the original.

You do stand a much better chance with the better known companies such as Swedish Erotica (Topco Sales) and California Exotic Novelties. As the adult toy market has been getting more competitive, the major players do try to turn out better products than have been available in year's past. There are some smaller companies that focus on turning out a small line of very high quality products. One of the things we need to do in a future issue is an article on the different manufacturers. We do try to do some comparisons in our reviews as well to show how products might differ from similar offerings from other companies.

If you have any other suggestions to help reader's sort things out, we'd love to hear them.

A reader writes: First off, I am very impressed with your web site. Thanks for putting all the helpful info and pics online. I am a 30 year old female always wanted to try some vibrators or dildos, but never did because I am too shy to go to the stores to look or ask. I am so glad to have found you online! After learning from your articles, I still would like to know from you what should be the best for a first time toy user?  (I know I prefer soft material, and should probably start 'small') BUT dildo or vib?  which kind? Please give me some recommendations.

Answer: It all depends upon the type of stimulation you like. By far, the most popular vibrator of all is the Pocket Rocket, but it provides clitoral stimulation only.  Probably the best way to start is with one of the basic soft regular adjustable speed vibes such as the Soft Touch. You can use these vaginally and clitorally at different speeds to see what you like best. Once you know what type of stimulation you like best, it is easier to decide what other things you might like to try, as different products provide different sensations. If you find you really like both vaginal and clitoral stimulation, then you might want to try the Rabbit, but it is pretty intense, so that is why a little experimentation with an basic vibe first is a good idea. You may decide you don't like vibration at all, but prefer something more penis shaped. Or you might decide that you like very gentle vibration, but want something that does not look at all like a sex toy- in which case the natural contours might be the right toy for you.

We'll have to give this some more thought, as it will probably inspire an article.
