XXX: A Woman's Right to Pornography
by Wendy McElroy
Paperback, 1st ed., 256pp.  ISBN: 0312152450, St. Martin's Press, Inc.

The forces of censorship are gathering their strength for increased attacks on our rights as adults to view sexually explicit material. This is an excellent book on the issue of censorship and sexuality from a woman's point of view. McElroy makes it very clear how censorship is used most often to deny women rights to information about their own sexuality and reproductive options. A good example is the failed Telecommunications Bill whcih could have made the discussion of abortion on the Internet illegal because it is obscene. After the Canadian Supreme several years ago that led to increased censorship, one of the first actions was to go after lesbian, gay, and feminist literature.

While censors argue that they are working to protect women, the result of their actions is to deny that women can consent to a wide variety of activities. Censorship forces have leaders that consider oral sex a crime against nature, who believe that any act of sex between a man and a woman is rape, and many other extreme and strange ideas. They want to use the force of law to make us comply with their twisted ideas about sexuality.

McElroy goes step by step through the arguments of the censors and clearly and logically exposes their factual errors and outright lies. She provides a brief but encompassing overview of the history of censorship in America. She covers many of the forces for censorship active today, and if you are not regularly following this issue you will be shocked by how extreme as well as effective they are. She details how some feminists are playing right into the hands of the conservative religious right when they join forces with them on censorship issues. She also
interviews many women in the porn industry, such as Bobby Lilly, Nina Hartley, and Crystal Wilder. Most importantly, she makes clear and cogent arguments for the value of pornography and why it is important that it be protected speech.

If the censors have their way, this Web page and all discussion of sexuality would be outlawed. They are working hard to take your rights away. The very least you can do is be a little informed of their activities. This book will help.
