Los Angeles is one of the largest cities in the world, and one of the most diverse. There is a lot of sex here, although much of it is underground. Because of the diversity of our culture, with people from all over the world, there is just about any type of sexuality you might be looking for. Finding it, however, is another matter. This book does a good job of pointing you to many of the highlights. With 46 contributors, the book reflects a diversity of opinions as eclectic as the city. Descriptions tend to be short, pithy, and generally give you a decent sense of what each place is about. The sections cover strip clubs, porn vendors, lingerie and clubwear, outdoor fun, hotels and motels, spas and massage, BDSM and fetish, places to drink, and places open late (which are harder to find than you would think- L.A. is not a late night town, we need our beauty sleep). The book does a good job of covering the topics, with a few minor exceptions. Swinging gets short shrift by editor Hundley, with brief mentions of Freedom Acres and the decidedly unswingerly Naked City. Their advice on nude beaches is flat out wrong- the likelihood of getting arrested at a nude beach, especially in L.A. County, is extremely high. They don’t even mention San Onofre State Beach, the most popular and currently least raided of the area nude beaches. Local nude beaches go through cycles of being raided by police, so it would have been much better had they guided readers to one of the many Web sites that keep tabs on the current status of clothing optional beaches Which brings us to something else that would have been nice- an official Web site for the book. L.A. changes at such a brisk pace that only the earthquakes do a faster job of tearing down buildings and remaking the landscape. Businesses come and go at a brisk pace, and it would have been nice to have a place to go to check on updates for the places that don’t have Web sites listed. Overall, though, the book’s 350 entries cover a wide range of what Los Angeles has to offer, and even a few places that were new to us (and we know sex in L.A. very well). They even mention such esoterica as the fact that really hot women shop at Trader Joe’s (its really true, with some Trader Joe’s regularly frequented by droves of stunning women). The bastards even mention one of our favorite secret no one but us knows about it places in Palm Springs. The shopping coverage is very good, guiding you to best in sexy clothing adult toys stores. A lot of the entries reflect
the youthfulness of the authors and editors, with insights into some of
the trendier places, and interesting places you might not have thought
of to meet members of the opposite sex. It is also intelligently written,
eliciting more flushes than blushes. With the only other book on sex in
L.A., the raunchier Lust Angeles, now out of print, Horny? Los Angeles
is the only complete guide for sex seekers in the city of angels. And it
even has a complete index and one organized by area- pretty important for
an area often referred to as the 50 mile circle. For locals looking for
new discoveries, or horny travelers, it is a must have. Oh, and about the
rather odd title. It is a take-off on the publisher’s book on L.A. restaurants
called Hungry? Los Angeles.
