Irvin Bomb is noted for his photo realistic paintings of women. Photo realistic painting is very difficult, so difficult in fact that it has been recently conjectured by David Hockney that many of the great masters going as far back as the 15th century used simple optics to project the scene onto canvas to make it easier to reproduce. Nowadays we have computers that can do the heavy lifting, but Bomb works in the traditional method that has been popular since the advent of photography- using the grid method while working from a photograph. It is a much more painstaking process than doing the work on computer, but the results can be quite stunning. This first collection of Bomb’s work features a number of images of Penthouse Pet Ava Vincent, who also wrote the introduction. Its 64 pages offer a nice variety, from pencil on paper to watercolor and airbrush. Fetish and vampire themes crop up often, but there are also quite a number of pin-ups. Bomb has created art for magazines including Penthouse and High Society, and has an appealingly distinctive style that captures a lot of personality. A short section of the book describes how he creates his images, and a few photos of modeling sessions are included (although you have to look closely to confirm that it is a photo and not another of his works). A lot of erotic art of women comes off as somewhat cold and detached, but the eroticism of the moment is very well captured in his art. You can check out some samples
of his work on his official Web site, Nasty
Art. Bomb feels that what makes his art effective is the strong rapport
he has with his models. You can get a glimpse of what he means in the Nasty
Art Live videos of his painting sessions, also available from the Nasty
Art site.
