This large format 64 page paperbound book is an expanded version of the earlier Secret Sexual Positions. It includes some 100 briefly described sexual positions selected and adapted from ancient texts, including the Kama Sutra, The Perfumed Garden, Ananga-Ranga, and Ishimpo. Before Christianity took hold and incorporated the sex negative attitudes of early church leaders, there was a time when sexuality was celebrated and revered, when sex was not taboo but cause for joy and celebration. Detailed texts were written on sexuality, describing an almost endless array of techniques and positions. Explorer Sir Richard Burton translated The Perfumed Garden, the Kama Sutra, and Ananga-Ranga into English, giving us a modern look at these ancient attitudes towards sexuality. Sadly, When Burton died in 1890, his wife burned all of his erotic translations of erotic literature and his new annotations for his translation of the Perfumed Garden. This book provides some interesting historical background on the cultures of these ancient societies and the sexually repressive forces in the Christian church that have left us with a legacy of guilt, ignorance, and shame when it comes to sexuality. A look at an earlier and more open view of sexuality is quite refreshing. The 100 illustrations by Kyle Spencer and colored by Richard Stodart are excellent, capturing the look and feeling of erotic art from the different cultures represented in the book. The descriptions of the positions themselves capture the feeling of the originals without some of the more cryptic references in more literally faithful translations. Sprinkled throughout is sexual poetry by the author inspired by writings from poets and mystics through the ages. The book concludes with a "chronology of sexual embrace", showing key happenings and the changes of attitude about sexuality from 3500 B.C.E. to 1970. A quick read, it should offer some inspiration, some new things to try, and a reminder that our current and recent views about sexuality have not always been the norm. You can buy this book directly
