 Sapphistry
by Pat Califia Paperback, 3rd ed., 186pp. ISBN: 094148324X, Naiad Press, Incorporated If you are deeply interested in female sexuality, you should not be without Sapphistry, The Book of Lesbian Sexuality. Though this is not a quick read, I thoroughly enjoyed its serious and loving approach to female sexuality. It's kind of like my favorite librarian, smart and sexy. Chapters include The Erotic Imagination, Self-Loving, Partners, Communication, Common Sexual Concerns, Disabled Lesbians, Sexual Diseases, and Variations. This book is chalk full of information that you can take to heart. The author, Pat Califia, does not rely on unsubstantiated resources (e.g.many doctors say . . .). Further, she has actually spoken to women about their needs and desires. Pat is very specific and detailed when required, with concrete examples. When explaining the journey of the egg during ovulation, she writes, " . . .The ovum is caught in the fringed end of the uterine (fallopian) tube. This is a remarkable journey, give that the ovum is the size of a needle tip and the opening of the fallopian tube is about as large as a printed hyphen." This book also embodies a passionate view of women. She writes, "Remember that there is nothing wrong with asking someone if she would like to share a particular sexual experience with you. That includes sucking on her toes, squirting whipped cream on her clitoris, and spanking her perfect round behind." Talk about a book I can get behind! -KB
