The Yin-Yang Butterfly: Ancient Chinese Sexual Secrets for Western Lovers
by Valentin Chu

Paperback, 272pp., ISBN: 087477778X, Putnam Publishing Group

This book was recommended to me by a swinger friend, who told me that he got some of his best sexual techniques from it. Since he never seems to have any problems finding partners, I think that speaks well for the value of the book. Besides covering just sexual technique, though, there is also a lot of other interesting information to be found in this book.

For thousands of years, the Chinese have studied sexuality and its relationship with health and longevity. While modern China may be in denial of their rich sexual heritage, there is a lot of documentation on the history of sexuality in China. Scholar and former Time magazine correspondent Valentin Chu has made a study of many Chinese historical documents relating to the subject of sexuality, and has unearthed a wealth of fascinating information.

The first section of the book deals with the historical views of sexuality. In China, sex was seen as an important part of life, and they paid a lot of attention to developing ways to make sex even better. Taoist philosophers and proto-scientists studied sexuality and did experiments to find means of developing greater sexual energy. The results of this experimentation was practiced by the Chinese for a thousand years, and became known as the Art of the Bedchamber.

The author covers a lot of sexual mores over time. I was quite amused by what the Emperors went through to choose who they would bed that evening from the many courtesans and wives available. Many made it a game. One Emperor would let a butterfly loose, and spend the night with whomever it landed on. Another would float scraps of poetry in the water, and the lady who retrieved the scrap matching his was the companion that night. It was also interesting that scribes would watch the love-making of Emperors and record it all in an official book.

Part 2 of the book deals with sexual positions and techniques. The first known systematic descriptions of sexual positions and techniques come from ancient China. The author includes sections from The Classic of the Arcane Maid and The Mystic Master of the Grotto. You'll learn sexual positions with names such as Somersaulting Dragons and Cranes Entwining Necks.

Subsequent chapters include Food and Herbs for Love, Sexual Vitality, and the concept of Pluck and Nurture.

Part three is an updated look at ancient Chinese sexual secrets. It includes exercises for sexual vigor, some wonderful ancient love games, and an excellent chapter on sexual brinkmanship (controlling orgasm) and multiple orgasms. I especially liked the diagrams explaining how specific sexual positions can stimulate the clitoris, the g-spot, or the tip of the cervix (the three main pleasure points).

Overall, it is an entertaining and interesting read, with useful sexual information along with entertaining anecdotes, snippets of poetry, and ancient Chinese stories. You'll find ideas that will help the jade fountain flow ecstatically with contact with the heavenly root.
