This new DVD from Dr. Susan Block combines fascinating historical information about a uniquely decadent period in sexual history with some contemporary and rather explicit decadence featuring some hot adult stars and enthusiastic amateurs. Weimar, Berlin in Germany (pronounced “vie-mar”) in the 1920’s was much more than just Times Square before Giuliani. Rather than a single red light district, it was more like a city of red light districts, with more than 21 different areas, each catering to different sexual interests. By some accounts threw were over 100,000 prostitutes in the city, many of them living normal daytime lives, and some of them even being upper class. It was a city of transvestites, prostitutes, lesbians, flagellants, and fetishists. This decadent Mecca of sexuality came to a crashing end when the Nazis came to power. Sharing the same devotion to free speech and sexual freedom as the Bush administration, they rounded up homosexuals and other “perverts”, and destroyed areas of the city. Whenever you see archival footage of Nazis burning books, what you are looking at is the burning of the archival sex collection of Magnus Hirschfield, one of the great pioneers of sexual research and known then as the “Einstein of sex”. This DVD, culled from live episodes of the Dr. Susan Block show, features Berkeley Professor and Weimar Berlin Expert Prof. Mel Gordon. He is the author of Voluptuous Panic, a history and collection of erotic art relating to Weimar, Berlin. While discussing the city and sharing his insight, we also get to see a lot of the art and photographs from the book. Dr. Block keeps it interesting and in the appropriate spirit of decadence. One of the main features is a rare German pedal powered Female Self Gratifier. Pumping on the pedals causes a reciprocal pumping of a dildo into the vagina, and several women give it a try. Mika Tan, Monique DeMoan, and the Dr. Susan Block Show’s own Kim Mendoza are just a few of the women who take themselves for a ride. There are also some listener call-ins with advice on threesomes and other subjects, the usual girls on the bed interviews and playful nudity (with touching, stroking, masturbation, sucking and orgasms). I may be a bit skeptical of the scientific integrity of their test of a couple of aphrodisiacs. It is a little like testing an appetite enhancer in a room filled with four star chefs doing their best work. And while the Surgeon General has not issued any guidelines on smoking a cigar with your pussy, as Mika Tan does here, I can’t imagine that it is either all that healthy or something they will ever allow you to do in restaurants (or even cigar bars). If it has been awhile since you have seen a Block video, you should note that the video quality is much improved from year’s past, with better audio and production. It all takes place at her Speakeasy in downtown Los Angeles. These are rather amazing evening soirees, where open sexuality seems so disarmingly normal, as if sex was something we all normally do. That openness and non-porn feel of the sex makes this both educational, and while not technically a stroke video, something you will probably also find arousing.
